In 1610, Italian astronomer and mathematician, Galileo Galilei turned
his telescope upon the planet Jupiter and saw there four small moons
orbiting around it. This discovery disproved the officially held
position that the earth was the center of the universe.
Nearly 400 years later, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, under the
auspices of NASA, launched a small space probe named after Galileo
Galilei: The Galileo Space Probe. On December 7th, 1995 the Galileo
Space Probe entered into orbit around the planet Jupiter.
