The Summer Movie Theatre Community
was formed by István Lálity and Dénes Döbrei in May 1988 in Subotica.
The Community was meant as an experimental workshop for young artists.
At the 1994 THEALTER festival they appeared with a continuously
developing ’build-in-place’ project created by artists, musicians and
actors. Following a longer break they are performing again at THEALTER
International under the management of MASZK Association. The text of
the play was written on the basis of István Lálity’s letters from
Dominica. The subject is cuisine. Relying on our common everyday
gestures, but through dance and recitation, the performance shows a
world where objects surrounding us, by their different qualities of
existence, influence our relationship with our environment. The
director István Lálity and Dénes Döbrei’s correspondence of several
years discusses cuisine and the gastronomy of two distant worlds within
the framework of theatre. The company shows the first part of this work
process with the help of Elektra Sarpati’s live, improvisational jazz
music. They come up with an experimental but tried and tested musical
and theatrical composition, in which the musicality of recitation, the
rhythm of fine arts and the movements of the actors play an equal to
that of music. They wish to present a letter clear in thought, unified
and musically composed. They would like to use this form of theatre to
continue the work of the Community, which was forced to stop for
several years. Stratis Vouyoucas was born in 1971 in Nancy. He studied
philosophy at Sorbonne, graduated in 1993, and later obtained a 3-month
scholarship at New York University. He worked as an assistant director
for Theo Angelopoulos in the film The Gaze of Odysseus in 1994-95, and
has directed several short films. During his stay in Szeged he is
filming at THEALTER 2000, documenting the events of the festival, and
will compile a short film afterwards.
