How one starts out in life, what one can accomplish from the unique
task of making a difference in the world, of living a destiny: this is
the theme of every tale and story. And that is the main theme of
story-telling itself, in all its forms, as it is here in a theatre
play, becoming its urging core motivation.
Where is the realm in which dreams come true and are embodied in palpable forms? Is there such a place at all?
The two young men, the protagonists of our story, are trying to solve
this mistery. They come from Eastern Europe. And that is not an
advantageous heritage. It is really hard for them to decide whether it
is better to give in to the lures of mirages and move to a
promised-land of well-being, or to remain with the hope that even in
the desperately impossible intricacies of one's homeland, nothing is
impossible. The choice is there. But then, what is to become of the
structure of life itself:
what is to become of love and hatred, emotions and desires, dreams and friendship?
The text of the play is based on fragments and motives from the works
of Alfred Döblin, Herman Hesse, Christopher Isherwood, Egon Erwin
Kisch, Siegfried Lenz, Thomas Mann and Rainer Maria Rilke. Its form is
inspired by the Berlin cabaret culture of the 1930s, by its particular
style in singing, dancing and stage-motion.
