The comedy of the great 19th century German playwright, with its fresh,
free-spirited, playful tone and sparkling irony, rose above the
literature of the Romantic-Biedermeier period, and has become a play
regularly put on stage around the world.
It raises the basic questions of individual and social existence in a
tale-like, seemingly easy form: who are we? why shall we live, and how?
should we give up our freedom in order to fit in with society? should
we give up love for family life? and the independence of our thinking
so as to become a useful member of mankind?
The events take place in the field between reality and dreams, between
our most inner ego and the roles we play in the world, between the
poles of fate and free will. It is put on a stage and in a style which
are both reduced to the minimum, in close proximity to the audience. |
