The thought to make a movie out of the so-called ’Peasant Bible’ has
been with me for years. Contrary to other apocryphal story-books, in
this collection the same voice is present from beginning to end. It is
the narrating voice of a peasant who, while recounting the story, is
free of theological thoughts, has no interest in the destruction of
Nineveh or Jerusalem, but always expresses his childishly simple and
ridiculously crude interpretation of the world.
What really grabs you is the Voice, floating through the stories of the Old and the New
Testament, the voice that could become an example and master of all narrators, with its
mythical atmosphere, sense of humour, wildness and absurd distortions.
