In Chekhov’s ’The Bear’, a young landlord, Smirnov, losing hope to get
money back from his debtors, visits one of them, a widow called Popova,
who lives with her servant, Luka. Her unhappy marriage embittered her
life. Her husband used to cheat on her, he wasted their money and left
her alone at home often. Her mourning is a good pretext to stay away
from her husband’s creditors. However, Smirnov has nothing to lose. His
cruel measures to get his money back prove to ignore all feelings and
emotions. |
