’Don’t kill every caterpillar if you want to see white butterflies dance.’ (koan)
’He thinks of the forest engrossed, then realises he is not in the forest, the forest is not in him, but he is the forest. He is the forest in the forest, but the forest exists in him, too. He realises he does not exist and there is no forest either, only those things exist which he lives to see here on the dark stage in the deep of the forest. Tinkling leaves, warbling birds, whispering leaves of grass, a dewy breath, a clink of tears flowing from his eyes in the cold, falling on the tree trunk, only these sincere moments exist. Between two buzzes, the sound of silence is the only real conversation, which is beyond description, as inexpressible as reality itself, it contains everything, music comes from it, the same way as movement comes from immobility. The images in Arnold’s head change from moment to moment in the evening hours, birds are flying among the trees, bouncing down from the branches to the ground, striking with their beaks in the dust. He sees the trees in his visions as lungs turned upside down, and his palm as a leaf. Silence is the opposite of talk, lung is the opposite of tree, every natural human element has a natural opposite: eating and shitting, drinking and urinating, birth and death, kiss and bite… Under his dry coat his body is all wet, cold outside, warm inside. Every evening he goes a little bit closer to the skies, takes a walk on the path of stars, takes a look at the Little Bear, the little coach of his childhood, the Moon covers his eyes with a gentle breath, he lives the dark blue of the forest at night like no one else can.’ (Der Daphnis)
