Theatre Company SPACE (Holland): Holland Tsunami - Drowning in Europe • a theatrical crisis-mockumentary

‘We are facing a rescue operation unparal-leled until this moment. We must achieve a full evacuation of 16 million people within a month’s time. This means over 170.000 people per day. Only one country, the Hungarian Republic is willing to admit the Dutch refugees, especially because there is a very limited chance that they will ever be able to return to their homeland.’ (www.dangerzone.nl)
What if Holland was swept away by a tsunami, and only Hungary admitted the refugees? What if the total population of Holland was resettled and the Dutch should try to integrate into life in Hungary?
By this mock disaster scenario, SPACE reveals the unique characteristics of the two countries. Holland Tsunami is an exploratory operation on national identity and on the fear of loosing it. It sheds poetic light on the problems the new European countries have with their own image and on the conceitedness of the West. Complex sociopolitical themes are brought back to human standards. Holland Tsunami is neither a scientific study, nor a political pamphlet, but a feverish chain of thoughts full of self-irony.
Holland Tsunami is a co-production of SPACE and Workshop Foundation. It premiered at LOW Dutch-Flemish Kultfeszt at the Keleti Railway Station in Budapest.
Special thanks to Mihály Vígh for the Balaton songs.
