SZESZ - Szeged University Theatre was founded in 2003, its members are mainly university students. The performances are primarily intended for an audience 18-25 years of age, but of course everybody is welcome. SZESZ has become a very important factor in the artistic life of Szeged and aims at providing theatre/drama education for young people in the first place. They have had five premieres so far and now are working on their new production based on Jenô Heltai’s drama. They also won prizes in Pécs at the Festival for University Theatres in 2005 and 2006.
Miklós Hubay’s play written for this festival is a national premiere. The old master looks back on our terrible and, at the same time, wonderful 20th century with irony and with a good deal of self-irony, too. Expanding the space-time dimension, he interprets human existence on a philosophical level, and also examines European culture and civilization. The question of ’What if…’ is in the focus of the play. What if Oedipus hadn’t killed? Wouldn’t have Freud’s theories have existed either? It is just the same. Metamorhosis. Definition of basic moral issues. Simplicity. Wisdom. Soberness. Based on the Greek-Roman literary heritage. A very timely play indeed. (Zoltán Czene, SZESZ, artistic director)
