‘One commits suicide when a little part of one’s
self has always existed outside everything. It’s about an initial inadaptivity
that might also be unconscious. The person destined to commit suicide is only
by chance in this world. In fact he does not belong anywhere.’
(Desislava Shpatova)
Sarah Kane, the British playwright, who committed suicide at a very
young age, is today one of the most often staged authors in the contemporary,
experimental theatre scene. She wrote shocking plays, which are regularly
played worldwide. This production is the Bulgarian premiere of Psychosis 4.48,
which was put on stage as an ‘existentialist cabaret’ by Desislava Shpatova,
and thus was radically reinterpreted by her. 4.48 Psychosis is a co-production
with the International Theatre Festival ‘Varna Summer’ and the Theatre Workshop
Sfumato. It premiered last summer on the Varna Festival, this year it has been
played in Germany and France, too.
Legal Art Centre first performed in Hungary in 2003: The Maids was a
huge success on THEALTER festival in Szeged. The two founding members of the
group, Desislava Shpatova and Snezhina Petrova, usually work with different
artists in their productions. In the Sarah Kane play, Ivo Dimchev has the other
main role, whose solo performance was among the best of THEALTER last year, and
who returned and performed this spring not only in Szeged, but in Budapest as well.
