The puppet theatre performance is based on motives and
themes from Scottish fairy tales. Paper puppets made with meticulous precision
tell the story of a cunning giant, a brave prince and a beautiful lady. As it
usually happens in fairy tales, the prince proves to be cleverer than the giant
in the end and wins the lady’s hand. The beautifully-dressed characters are
born out of/from crumpled paper, sweet wrappers and silver foil in the front of
the audience’s eyes.
Last October they received the special jury award in
the Bananikkalla International Theatre Festival in Tallin for the inventiveness
and expressiveness of the performance.
The ‘Theatre for Children and Youth “Maly”’ was
founded 15 years ago. They have staged theatre performances in several genres
since, from puppet theatre plays to adaptations of classic playwrights. They
have won awards on a number of Russian and international festivals. Since 1992,
they have organised a biennial international festival themselves in Velikiy
Novgorod which focuses on the genre of the fairy tale.
