Pellagra
is a vitamin deficiency disease caused by dietary lack of niacin and protein.
It was a common and frightening disease, due to malnutrition, among the poor in
the 18th and 19th centuries. Its name originated from Italy, from ‘pelle agra’
(‘pelle’ means skin, ‘agra’
sour) as one of the main symptoms was red skin lesions slowly developing on the
body. Other symptoms included high sensitivity to sunlight, aggression,
insomnia, diarrhoea, and eventual dementia. If left untreated, the disease killed
very slowly, within 4 or 5 years. There has been speculation that the legend of
vampires
may have been furthered in the 1700's during pellagra outbreaks in Europe.

‘Porphyria is a disorder in the porphyrin metabolism
and results in photosensitivity. Porphyria itself is caused by the mutation of
the gene of the Urod enzyme, which then obstructs the activity of the enzyme,
so uroporphyrin starts to accumulate in the organism. This compound becomes
activated due to sunlight… For those suffering from porphyria, regular blood
transfusion is the only effective medication today…’
The performance uses excerpts form the educational
documentary ‘Rabies’ by dr Radovan Pavlovity (Institute for Animal Hygiene,
Novi Sad, 1977)
