The performances of Collective of Natural Disasters, established in
1984, cannot be easily described either as theatre, or dance, or
exhibition, or object art, or assemblage, or video-installation, or
radio-play, or concert. The performances are based on elements of all
these genres. The spectators find themselves in strange situations, as
they are wandering around, receiving only fragmentary memories, scraps
of notes, left behind objects, and strangely edited speeches and video
footages. Though their attention is directed slightly by the dramaturgy
of light, and the order of the footages, their perception is attacked
from all around: the events are happening parallel to each other.
The focus of the performance is placed on the reprehensible facts of
genocide and assassination. Using suicide terrorists’ notes and other
documents, the performance attempts to dislodge us from the safety of
the everyday-life, and to bring us closer to the Other questioning the
certainty of ‘it cannot happen to me’.
‘I was one of those children... who went from home to school and then
school to home. I was very good at school, at my studies. I didn’t go
out to the street to play, only once in a while. I mean all my life all
I cared about was my duties. I have kept my heart clean... Now, I am
ready for the whirling blossom.’
‘Terrorists, human bombs, martyrs, murderers…- it can also happen to you…’
