Focus Workshop from Szeged was established in 2002 by Imola Orsolya
Benkő, the current artistic director. Their previous productions, based
on the literary works of some Hungarian and foreign authors (e.g. Péter
Esterházy, Mrozek, Péter Nádas), have achieved success in many theatres
in Hungary. The company defines itself as ’research theatre’: they are
committed to seeking new forms and communicative channels of theatrical
expression. The starting point of their research is the spectator, who
is expected to react and interpret, and whose physical presence and
reception strategies are part of the performance.
Their latest production draws attention to the problem of social and
individual immunity, which is the result of the abundance of impulses
affecting us everyday. The performance protests against this phenomena
and undertakes the labels of ’provoking’, ’irritating’, ’I don’t like
it’, and ’I don’t understand it’ while examining this problem area with
the devices of experimental theatre and psychological experiments. The
audience is in a special position: they are subject to three thematic
experiments.
