If life is a dream God is dreaming, might it happen that the bloody
chain of assassinations, betrayals and treason, the struggle for power
and possession and, as a tragic result of all this, the frightful
peripeteias piercing all the way through the play, as well as the
inescapable solitude, are only a nightmare of the hopelessly
unfortunate hunchback Richard, who is followed by the inevitability of
malicious fate?
The problems and dilemmas of power and authority are common to all
mankind, but are most topical in Ukraine nowadays. Life and Death, Love
and Hate, Faith and Fear are interlaced into one Gordian knot in the
play. Is it possible to untangle it? We all have to find our own answer
to this question as these issues address the heart of the spectator
directly.
The Kiev-based Theatre DAKH was founded as a theatre school by
Vladislav Troitsky in 1994. Now it functions as a contemporary arts
centre, where the company regularly participates in trainings and
invites guest directors. Seeking new ways of theatrical expression,
they have produced a series of performances in the last few years that
adapt plays by Shakespeare (Macbeth, King Lear, Richard III, Hamlet) as
mystery-plays, using elements of Ukranian folk culture. The
performances go without words and are characterized by a ritual
atmosphere, music, songs and a remarkably rich imagery, and have been
influenced by recent events in Ukraine. An important part of the
company is DakhaBrakha, ethno-chaos band, which plays live during the
performances. The company has already performed at other Hungarian
festivals, too.
