‘In Zsótér’s M. Courage, the performers climb up walls, jump off,
escape through windows, run about in stairways, speak in a human voice
from upstairs to the narrow island of the light well on the ground
floor. They fall to the ground, drag along each other on the sludgy
pavement. The bulk of the performance is a wriggle, a sensible bustle,
joyful floor exercises and gymnastics on apparatus, all with a purpose.
The graduating class accompany each other on different instruments.
Everybody takes part equally, no solo performances. If Eilif is lying
dead in the court, his body is marked with chalk as in a Columbo
episode.
Only the less talented consider the unity of styles sacred. Those who
are more interested in exploring theatre are concerned in the
inconsistency of life (and playing).
There are three Mother Courage in this final exam: Nóra Diána Takács,
who sings of the loud sutling wench in a victorious voice, the fragile
Diána Magdolna Kiss faces difficulties stubbornly and Kata Szilágyi
with the bitterness of Niobe.
They do not warn the audience that they pass on the leading role. One
can tell from their eyes that it is somebody else’s turn now. Three
different personalities. Three approaches. One interpretation.’
