“Pinocchio is ours. We have his love for life, his desire for freedom, his sense of justice and naivety, just like our innate laziness. We walk on his path, when we learn to live by experiencing the illogical laws of society. The absolute child with his curiosity and universal trust can only be shown in front of a gloomy background, which Collodi provides through the example of Italian villages devastated by capitalism. While travelling in Hungary’s underdeveloped villages, I did see Pinocchio in the eyes of those poor kids roaming the dusty roads.”
