Othello – one of us
Shakespeare’s tragedy has always inspired other forms of art which focus on emotions such as passion, fear and jealousy. The universal quality of these feelings also makes the piece suit contemporary times and, along with other works by Shakespeare, brings catharsis in modern art.
The play balances between the archetypal passion of man and woman and an unscrupulous political game. The two choreographers have recognised the potential for modernising the play and attempted to address these questions in the language of dance.
The story is set in one night, at a party, in limited time and space.
Is this an Othello from the end of the party? From the end of the game? From the end of the play? The typically tragic plot is more a consequence of intrigues and coincidence than the hubris of the main characters. It is tackled by the pure means of dance theatre, addressing not only passion but also some new symbols characteristic of the present times.

The two choreographers, Zoran Marković and Maša Kolar, studied classic and contemporary dance in ex-Yugoslavia, then started to work in Western Europe in the 1990s both as solo dancers and as choreographers. In the past decade, they have regularly returned to Serbia to choreograph and to teach the new generations.

The Belgrade-based Bitef Theatre encourages and promotes new theatre trends and styles. Bitef Dance Company is its new initiative created in response to the fact that contemporary dance in Serbia still has opportunities for development. There are a number of different dance theatre groups in Belgrade but they lack the professional background. However, Bitef Dance Company, as part of Bitef Theatre, can rely both on the excellent dancers and on the necessary know-how when representing contemporary dance in the national and international dance scene.
Moreover, the Bitef Theatre team organises one of the most prestigious international theatre festivals of the region. Bitef Festival, founded in 1967, presents the latest theatre trends as well as the most exciting Serbian productions every September. Bitef Dance Company members have the chance here to see new works by prominent choreographers and companies as well as to participate in workshops and work with guest choreographers.
Bitef Theatre will perform for the first time in Hungary.
