Once there was a factory hall and there appeared a Croatian theatre in it.
They became the standard for their age, they were rebels, hard, clean, open-hearted, good.
In twenty years, the boys came to see what remained on the ruins of the years.
We remained there!
These boys shout in our face: we are burnt out, we have sold and prostituted ourselves.
They are not theatre!
They say it!
They are not actors.
They say it.
They are our children!

Vatrotehna 2.0 is the re/deconstruction of the performance Vatrotehna produced in 1990, on the territory of the former Badel distillery in Zagreb. The first performance of the Montaľstroj group raised a number of burning questions, pertaining to Croatian politics and culture, already at the time. Vatrotehna 2.0 tackles the unveiling of the mechanisms of power and violence, based upon Prometheus Bound by Aeschylus, in a new director’s reading by Borut ©eparović. It continues the scrutiny of the validity of social structures of unemployable democracy, drawing attention to the burned sites struggling in the shackles of capitalism and to the unsuccessful period of transition in the past 20 years. Vatrotehna 2.0 is performed by 16-19 year-old actors, who search for reference points for their own generation and identity on the stage and try to define their relationship to the world and the time in which they live. Vatrotehna 2.0 is a moment of theatrical reality. Prepare yourself for it!

The Vatrotehna company was formerly a national defence authority. It provided fire-fighting services to both civilians and the business sector in the ex-Yugoslav region. The company became the main sponsor of the 1990 performance, entitled eponymously Vatrotehna. Though the company was later liquidated, Montaľstroj has remained faithful to the name because the fate of the company, as a peculiar metaphor, accurately reflects the typical structure of the ruin that ensued due to the war.

Montaľstroj was founded as an independent performance group in 1989 by Borut ©eparović. Since the beginnings, they have aimed at expanding the mental and physical limits of the actors and at creating contemporary works which use different art forms and genres. During the 1990s, Montaľstroj received international recognition as the most successful Croatian physical theatre. It performed at a number of international festivals and venues in more than 20 European countries and in the US. Widely differing in their content, style and format, Montaľstroj performances were usually described as politically engaged, often exploring interdisciplinary areas. Historical changes, including the war in Yugoslavia, have had a deep influence on their work, everyday events as the raw material for their performances often appear in a radical form on the stage.
Montaľstroj will perform for the first time in Hungary.

The performance is a co-production of Montaľstroj, Zagreb Youth Theatre and Perforacije Festival.
