Csiky Gergely Hungarian State Theatre of Timisoara (Romania): Gianina Cărbunariu: Mady-baby

24. Sunday 17:00     Old Synagogue

80'

actress: Borbély B. Emília
translated by: Csűrös Réka
director: B. Fülöp Erzsébet

'Home…I am not at home. I don’t feel like home either here or there. I’m not at home here and I’m not at home there. I won’t be at home here or there.' (Mady)

The monodrama is about three young Romanians and about self-sacrifice. Mady, living in bad circumstances in Bucharest, is persuaded by her friend Voicu to go and live with him in Ireland. She meets Bogdan at the airport and they continue their journey together. From that point on, the three people’s fate is intertwined. Mady first becomes a tool, then the victim of the boys’ fight for their self-realization, both of them taking advantage of her prostitution.

Mady’s story is based on notions like goodness and sin, descents and redemption, self-interest and sacrifice. It is a demonstration of unselfish love which is basically present anywhere we go: in public spaces, lanes, on buses and in stores, by the road, in hospitals. In others or within ourselves.

Emília Borbély B. won the Award for the Best Actress at the 25th Piatra Neamţ Theatre Festival, the Special Prize at the 8th International University Theatre Festival in Pécs and the Main Prize at Gala Star Festival in Bákó in 2011.

“Emília Borbély B.’s performance is so natural, easy-flowing and free of pathos that I forget I am watching her on stage. This way of acting makes the performance painfully poignant. The actress doesn’t only prove her talent but also shows her amazing skills to improvise. It doesn’t matter how the audience reacts because she never acts out of her character. It seems as if she improvised the text on stage though I know she plays a written role. She switches between the comical and dramatic parts so easily, without any effort, that in one moment I burst into laughter, then in the next one I’m moved to tears.”
(Judit Simon, Transylvanian Report)
