The St. Petersburg (former Leningrad) based Derevo was first invited to Hungary in 1992 by MASZK Association. They brought a very special street performance to Szeged. In the following years, they presented their new shows in Hungary, and the leader of the company Anton Adasinsky led training courses, too. As they became internationally more and more acclaimed, they moved to Germany in the middle of the 90s. They have taken part in the most prestigious festivals throughout the world, and have received numerous awards. They have also cooperated with other companies and artists, made films and music. With their latest production Harlequin the founding members of Derevo, Jelena Jarovaja and Anton Adasinsky pay tribute to the theatre of masks, medieval pantomime plays, travelling musicians and clowns. In this spectacular performance the two excellent dancers tell old, traditional stories in a poetic language, full of emotions.
”Under 'occupation' on the customs form I had put 'Harlequin'. The policeman asked me what it meant. I answered, 'this has been my role in theatre for many years.' 'You should write ''Actor”', said he. I apologized. He smiled. Going away from his desk, I felt his glare on my back. And suddenly I realised that I was walking differently. Lighter, snappier… as if I were 300 years younger.”
