These Childish Things is not a child’s game, nor a chain of childish amusements, only the adult may depreciate it as one. A child’s sensitive soul opens up for us through his pure, innocent look. A child has pure emotions, and an innocent attitude towards the world and its incomprehensible horrors. The child is no longer a child, but not yet an adult. He is an adolescent walking on the no man’s land of understanding the world. He watches the body’s secrets and the immortality of the soul with metaphysical anxiety. This is a game to be played anytime and anywhere. The depth of a child’s soul can only be escaped through roars of laughter and weep that hunts horror away. Or if there is no other way out, one must share this with an audience. Similarly to the case of a well: the deeper we dig, the higher the water springs. A grown-up actor impersonates the child and the adults that surround him. They make absurd and grotesque appearances converting the stage into a ‘multi-character’ game.
Raymond Cousse was a writer, director and actor. He wrote plays for himself and about himself with a unique worldview and universal relevance. His play, These Childish Things is still on stage worldwide. A child, at all times, is a small warrior: love being his sword, humour his shield and freedom his habitat.
