Tolnai. Orpheus. Sentenced to orphanage by the country, sentenced to solitude by sorrow. Far away from the azure of the Adriatic, from the beloved Euridice. Instead of suppressing their loneliness, they let it intensify. A heart-wrenching calamity or a heady burden, carried voluntarily? Notes born from the sense of loss, lines overwhelmed with impossible desire. Inspiring madness. This is the task of the artist. Balancing between life and death until all chords die away.
Janus University Theatre (JESZ) was established in 1996 in Pécs on János Mikuli’s and András Ernő Tóth’s initiative. With the participation of university students, professional actors and guest directors they have several premieres per year. Besides traditional performances, they function as an experimental workshop, too. They host fringe performances and organize the National Student Drama Festival every year. They regularly take part in national and international festivals. In 2010 they were invited to the ASZTAL Festival at Szkéné Theatre in Budapest with their adaptation of The Bacchae, and at the European Universities Theatre Festival in Istanbul they represented Hungary with Gospel According to Matthew.
SZESZ - Szeged University Theatre, which was founded in 2003, mainly consists of university and college students. Since January 2010 the company plays at Pinceszínház again on a regular basis. They have become a very important element of the artisctic life in Szeged. SZESZ aims at providing theatre/drama education for young people in the first place, serving as a link between the traditional theatre venues and the fringe theatre scene in Szeged. A truly civil grassroots initiative, relying on its own resources, and the past eight years proved that the company is an essential factor and an inspiring example. The most important credits: at the National Student Drama Festival classified as ’Gold’ in 2006, at 10th Kaleidoszkóp Poem Festival classified as ’Silver’ in 2008.
