I. The Beach
’I laid my heart open to the gentle indifference of the universe’, says Camus’ hero in the last sentences of The Stranger, looking out of his prison cell. Fear is the last shelter of morality. But it is present only as a negative mark. Those who are conquered by fear can conquer morality but cannot be immoral. The indifference of the world is the first failure of morality. It is not a point of reference, it doesn’t show off with its lack, it doesn’t exist, as if it has never existed before.
MASZK Association has been cooperating with András Urbán, managing director of Kosztolányi Dezső Theatre in Subotica, since 2003. Special thanks to Ottó Tolnai for the poems.
It takes place in the theatre, in a specific and universal space. Specific, since it takes place right after the first part The Beach, in the same space but with different sets and with different actors on stage. Universal, since, as theatre, it can be in any theatre where The Beach comes first. Complaint, sorrow and fear was inspired by some of Ottó Tolnai’s poems as well as by theories of Pseudo Longinos on the Sublime.
Supported by: NKA, OKM, PSOK Coproduction partner: Kosztolányi Dezső Theatre (Subotica)
The performance was managed by MASZK Association.
