Ireland, 1652. The British Parliament accepts the cruellest decree of its history, the law entitled “In hell or to Connaught”. Some of the Irish inhabitants are expelled to one of the island’s most deserted territories, others are put on a ship and sent across the sea. The rebellious are executed. British soldiers get six pounds for every wolf and for the head of every Irish rebel alike. The British playwright, Helen Edmunson (1964) is particularly well known for her theatre adaptations of various literary classics. Her plays are regularly played on stages all over Britain. The Clearing received the John Whiting Award for best new play, as well as a Time Out Award.
